Culture of a team will make or break it.

As I was sitting in my car on this 25 degree morning waiting for the heat to kick in, this thought came to me…

I believe there is a misconception of the word “team” in real estate. It’s true that one of the reasons people get into this business is for the opportunity to have a more flexible life. The ability to work as much or as little as you’d like is definitely a draw for many, and being your own boss has its freedoms for sure. But on the flip side, getting started in real estate can be a very expensive endeavor, and some agents join teams for that reason. Real estate school does not teach you how to obtain business. They don’t teach you the basics of marketing that are needed from day one. And unfortunately, neither do many brokerages. Teams give agents the opportunity to be surrounded by that motivation and guidance on a daily basis and to better understand how to actually get your first few deals in the pipeline.

Let’s go back to the “being your own boss” part. Now, this is just me and not everyone will agree; being part of a team should not mean that the feeling of running your own business shouldn’t exist. While there is always the designated team lead, everyone plays an integral role in helping the team succeed. Everyone has goals. Weekly, monthly and yearly. And as long as those are hit (or surpassed), you’re on the right track. If they aren’t hit, the team lead has to evaluate themselves first before drawing the conclusion that it’s the other members not pulling their weight. It’s much like a classroom. If a majority of the kids are failing, is it obvioulsy the fault of the students? Not necessarily. Before we evelauate them, we must first evaluate ourselves as the team lead.

Teams shouldn’t exist so agents feel dependent on them. They should exist to set agents up for further success and that feeling of independence. Team members should come first. Before the team lead. They are the top of the totem pole. It’s up to you to help get them there. Once you do that you can then focus on you. While the team lead is there to assign leads, once that lead is assigned it no longer belongs to the team lead. It belongs to the agent in which it was assigned. That agent is now in the drivers seat and they are their own boss.

I have no qualms with solo agents. The qualm I have is that some solo agents don’t understand teams because they have been burned or had negative experiences on a team in the past. It is not their fault for feeling that way. Tristan Ahumda and I run our teams by putting the agent first, and that is where most agents get turned off – when the team they experienced did not have that culture in place

The culture of a team will make or break it. How you picture your members is of utmost importance. They are not there to make YOU rich. They are there to prosper along side you.
